Paver Sealer Benefits: Why Seal Your Pavers
Why use a paver sealer?
Sealers offer protection against stains, UV rays, and wear from foot traffic or vehicles. They can also enhance the appearance of concrete pavers and greatly help extend their lifespan. Here are 6 reasons why you should consider sealing the concrete pavers on your patio, parking pad, and walkways:
1. Add Durability & Stain Resistance
Weather can affect your pavers, causing them to fade, crack, or discolor. Sealing your pavers helps to prevent this damage by creating a barrier between the pavers and the elements. This increased durability can help extend the lifespan of pavers, ultimately saving you repair expenses in the long term. Sealing pavers also creates a protective barrier giving you more time to clean up spills and potential stains from substances like oil and grease. Unsealed pavers are much more porous and can quickly absorb stains.
2. Enhance Natural Color & Add Gloss
Paver sealers amplify their natural colors, if desired. Using an "enhanced" or "wet look" paver sealer will enhance and deepen the natural coloring in the paver. If this result is not preferred, look for a "natural look paver sealer." Paver sealers come in a range of sheens from matte to high gloss, and similar to paint, high gloss paver sealers tend to provide the most durability.
3. Stabilize Joints & Prevent Mold, Weeds & Pests
Porous, unsealed pavers are more likely to accommodate mold and weed growth and can also become an ideal habitat for insects and pests. Paver sealers help to create a barrier that keeps insects and pests out, reducing the likelihood of damage and infestations.
Paver sealers can stabilize the sand between each paver, locking in the joints. When it rains, joint sand can easily wash away or dislodge during pressure washing, leaving gaps. A paver sealer acts like a glue that helps to keep the sand in place, ensuring a level and stable surface. Stabilizing sand joints with a film-forming sealer will also inhibit weed growth and ant hills from growing up in the joints.
4. Cleaning & Maintenance
Concrete pavers that are not sealed can be challenging to clean, as dirt and debris tend to become ingrained in the surface over years and seasons. Sealing your pavers can make cleaning easier as the surface becomes smoother and less porous. This makes it easier to sweep away dirt and debris and keep your pavers well-maintained with minimal effort.
5. Color & Restoration
As a paver ages, its color fades and the exposed aggregate becomes more noticeable. Adding a color additive like Cobble Colors to a compatible paver sealer such as Cobble Loc can restore a paver's appearance and hide exposed aggregate. Cobble Colors is available in several semi-transparent color options, and color intensity can be adjusted by how many ounces are added per gallon of sealer (typically around 3 oz. per 1 gal.). Cobble Colors is intended for water-based sealers on concrete pavers and should not be used with solvent-based sealers or on natural stone.
6. Home Value
Finally, pavers that are well-maintained and protected against damage can be a major selling point if you're planning to put your home on the market. A well-maintained outdoor space can also make your home more appealing to prospective buyers, helping to increase the overall value of your property.
